Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co. KG

Case Study

The exhibition centre currently being built on a 200-acre site south of Stuttgart sets new standards in many ways.
The 412 metre long multi-storey car park spans the A8 motorway and the planned ICE railway line.

Since its founding in 1900 in Goeppingen in Southern Germany, construction company Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co. KG has grown from being a manufacturer of railway tracks to a major provider of engineering and construction services. With three operating divisions - highway and network engineering, railtrack construction, and civil and turnkey engineering - the firm has established an enviable track record of serving clients in the region and beyond.

Its clients include large enterprises as well as medium-sized companies and federal, regional and local authorities. Today, the family-owned company employs 2,600 staff and 120 trainees at various locations throughout Germany and Europe.

Amongst the company's most challenging projects was the € 800 million construction of the Neue Messe Stuttgart, a major new exhibition centre to the south of Stuttgart in Germany. This 'flagship' project provided the basis for Leonhard Weiss to review its existing cost management process and systems.

Therefore, the company looked for a system that met the specifications of the construction industry and that had proved successful in interfacing with SAP R/3 enterprise resource planning software. Following a detailed evaluation, Leonhard Weiss selected RIB Software's industry-leading software product, RIB CSuite.

Within three months of selecting RIB CSuite, Leonhard Weiss had implemented the Estimating and Billing modules at 20 sites. Master calculations were entered, reference projects produced, modules set up and standard forms prepared for quotations and invoices. Once extensive know-how in the company had been developed, a team of four cost management software 'experts' provided ongoing support and training to the firm's 300 users.

On the Neue Messe Stuttgart project, only eight months were scheduled for the site excavation works. The civil engineering team of Leonhard Weiss, Karl Fischer and F Kirchhoff had to mobilise quickly. The team's work scope included all civil engineering, outdoor installations and drainage. For the foundation ditches, 1.8 million cubic metres of earth had to be moved.

Accurate cost management on a project of this size and importance was critical to Leonard Weiss's performance. The firm's brief was to co-ordinate all the work, determine bills of quantities, produced its own tenders and estimate anticipated costs. Without the need to generate any paperwork, subcontractor quotes were invited, processed and forwarded to the costing department. The continuous work flow between procurement and costing led to significant time and cost savings. Another important improvement is that staff of all departments can now access an extensive cost database allowing quotations to be written more quickly.

Today, RIB CSuite is used by the entire company and forms the basis of all subcontractor quotations through to final invoices. More than 7,000 quotations and 20,000 invoices are generated each year, resulting in highly efficient cost management on a large scale.

"We were badly in need of a new cost management system as we had been using four different cost management systems, some of which were out of date."

"We were looking for an experienced, long-established vendor whose software is a safe investment. We also knew that other large construction companies in Germany were using RIB Software's RIB CSuite cost management system. That tipped the scales in favour of our decision."

"The standardised system allows processes to be controlled centrally. It also enables more efficient administration and higher quality standards. Through an ongoing programme of training for our staff, we can continue to exploit the extensive potential of the software and secure significant competitive advantage."
