Westinghouse Rail Systems

Case Study

Westinghouse Rail Systems uses the RIB solution in all UK company locations.

When Network Rail, owner and operator of Britain's rail infrastructure, presented RIB Software's industry-leading software to its supply chain, one of its aims was to achieve a consistent approach to cost estimating.

An invitation from Network Rail to attend a special Open Day at its headquarters office in London led to the implementation of RIB CSuite at Westinghouse Rail Systems, one of the world's leading railway signalling and control technology specialists.

Westinghouse, a member of the worldwide Invensys Group of companies, attended the showcase event for Network Rail's supply chain partners and recognised the full potential of RIB's software product to meet its needs.

Following Network Rail's Open Day, Westinghouse evaluated the leading cost management software products available on the market as part of its long-term strategy. The resulting detailed analysis and selection placed RIB Software well ahead of its competitors at the top of the list.

The implementation and roll-out of RIB Software's industry-leading product, RIBCSuite, across Westinghouse's UK operations is being led by a core team at the company's head office in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

A central estimating team of expert 'gurus' are responsible for the successful implementation and roll-out of the software across the company's user community. The system is now in use at Westinghouse's regional offices in Birmingham, Croydon, Glasgow, Swanley and York.

Westinghouse has adopted a modular approach to implementing RIB CSuite. Its initial licence allows core functionality for up to seven concurrent users. This gives the company the flexibility to expand its use of the system as users become more proficient. One of the success stories during the initial implementation phase was the development of customised user guides by RIB Software. The guides included worked examples and case studies that allowed Westinghouse users to familiarise themselves with the use of RIB CSuite prior to going 'live'.

RIB introduced a customised training plan and provided technical support for the roll-out of the new software to Westinghouse's nationwide user community, participating in a number of product roadshows across the country.

"Several features of the software are bringing tangible benefits to Westinghouse's operations. Its ability to hold a benchmarking price database for specific items is particularly useful, allowing users to compare schedules of rates and evaluate subcontractors' bids. There is also a facility to compile and manage electronic bills of quantities.

We consider RIB CSuite to be an essential tool for effective cost management on our projects. It has enabled us to improve the accuracy of our cost estimates and cost models throughout the pre-contract phase."
